MADS Theatre Presents Shelagh Stephenson's "The Memory of Water"

As Harper Lee once said, you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family - something that is never far from  Mary, Teresa, and Catherine's minds as they gather for their mother's funeral.

The three sisters have almost nothing in common, but they are forced together - both by the situation and by the inhospitable winter weather.  The mood in the small house is tense and understandably reflective, as the three sisters delve into their shared past and find each remembers her childhood slightly differently.  As tensions in the house mount, secrets are dug up, and the sisters say things that have gone unsaid for years.  As the funeral draws ever closer, the sisters are forced to admit just how much of an influence their family, and particularly their mother, has been on the women they have become.

Shelagh Stephenson's Olivier award winning script mixes comedy, tragedy, and keen observations about what it means to be part of a dysfunctional family as well as  the unreliable nature of memories.  Stephenson's script has been described as “wickedly funny and moving” and a “richly funny study of the pervasive power of the past".

The Memory of Water opens on 30th April and runs until the 5th May at MADS Little Theatre, Lord Street, Macclesfield, Cheshire, SK11 6SY.  Tickets cost £7.00 - £8.00 and are available either by calling 01625 611974, or by emailing tickets@madstheatre.org
