LAST weekend saw the remaining first round ties being completed in the Inter-League Cup, and once again it was our local sides from the ECL which came out on top against their rivals from the Crewe and District League.

Club AZ defeated Bunbury 3-2, although they had rather an uncomfortable second half. AZ were 3-0 up at the interval thanks to Andre Umebuani's double and an impressive Alan Charnock strike, but they were forced to hold on as Bunbury staged a second-half comeback with two goals from Alex Moore.

A hat-trick from Lindow's leading scorer Tommy Gill saw them ease through to the next round after a comfortable 4-0 victory against Malpas. John Cauley was also on the scoresheet.

But there was cup disappointment for Mary Dendy and Poynton Nomads B after tough draws away from home. Denby lost 4-0 at Crewe Reserves, while Nomads went down 2-0 at Sandbach.

The game of the day took place at Deva Close between Poynton Nomads A and Boarhound in the second round of the League Cup. Nomads goalkeeper Phil Howard was the hero as his side won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 4-2.

The game had finished 4-4 at the end of 90 minutes with Tom Watson (3) and Simon McMahon scoring for the Nomads, and Craig Vernon (2), Carl Barlow and Andy Foote on target for Boarhound. Mark Faulkner gave the home side the lead in extra time before the experienced striker Vernon completed his hat-trick to take the game to it's dramatic finale.

In the league, Alderley St Phillips early season form has deserted them as they slipped to another defeat, this time losing 3-0 against Old Alts 3-0. Goals coming from James McHugh, Kevin Austin and Alan Wake in the first half.

Poynton Kingfisher collected three points with a 2-1 victory against Bollington Athletic. Colin Speed smashed the winner after Bolly's Matt Delargy had cancelled out an earlier own goal.

Poynton FC recorded only their second victory of the season against a very disappointing Juno side with goals from Ewen McKinnon, Stuart Parkinson and Chris Rashleigh. Kieran Murray replied for Juno.

Mike Murphy (2), Ben Morrell and Neil Bowden were on target in Phoenix's comfortable 4-1 win at Nelson. Anthony Narandolo grabbed a consolation.
