UNLUCKY Macclesfield Ladies went out of the League Cup on penalties after a thrilling game against Wigan at Moss Rose.

Matches between the two sides have always been close, and this was no exception as the two sides were on level terms throughout virtually all of a tense game.Wigan took first blood after having the better of the first half, but Macc composed themselves and took the game to the Lancashire side.

After a series of corner, Macc thought they had equalised when a powerful drive from Jordana Buckley was tipped away by the Wigan keeper.

It didn't take them long to get on level terms though, when Sue Lea stabbed home her second goal in two games after moving into midfield.

Both sides had chances to win the game before the referee signalled 20 minutes of extra time.

Again, fortunes swayed between the two sides but no further goals came and the tie went to penalties.

Predictably, both sides were level after six penalties and so it went to sudden death.

Unfortunately for Macc, the Wigan keeper saved their first effort and the visitors converted their penalty to book their place in the next round.
