Macclesfield Town manager John Askey believes his side’s draw at promotion contenders Dagenham & Redbridge shows just what his side are capable of this season.

The Silkmen earned themselves a point away from home after Chris Holroyd equalised in the last minute of the game.

It means that Macclesfield stay right in contention for the play-off places, and Askey was fairly happy with what he saw.

“I was pleased throughout the game as we played well.

“When they scored it was against the run of play and it just shows where we’re at when we go to places like that,” he said.

“I thought we dominated the place and had a lot of chances, and if we didn’t get something from the game I would have been disappointed.

“I was frustrated with the goal we conceded and the fact that we didn’t get a penalty later on, but we’ve gone on to score and then have a great chance of winning it right at the end.

“Before the game I would have taken a point, but having now seen it I am slightly disappointed that we didn’t get all three.”

One talking point from the match came when Macclesfield were denied a penalty when Holroyd looked to be brought down in the box, and Askey admits he was baffled by the decision.

“I’m disappointed that the referee didn’t give it and only he knows why he didn’t do it,” he said.

“He tried to explain it but you can’t change a decision. It looked to be a penalty to everybody else but I guess you win some and you lose some.”

It was set to be a busy week for Macclesfield, as they went up against Chester as the Express went to print on Tuesday.

Askey was expecting a tough match heading into that game, and was unsure which players may have been available.

“It’s always tough whoever we play. Chester have been on a decent run so it will be a hard game but if we turn up and perform then we have a great chance of winning,” he said.

“We’ll have to see on Danny Rowe as he hasn’t trained for two weeks so he wouldn’t be match fit. We’ve got a good squad of players though so hopefully we can keep everybody else fit.

“We need to keep performing and doing well and then we should be there or there abouts at the end of the season.”

Following their game with Chester on Tuesday, Macclesfield will next travel to Maidstone United on Saturday.

Maidstone were in poor form heading into the game, having lost four league matches in a row ahead of their fixture with Sutton on Tuesday.
