Wilmslow Rugby Club had a successful weekend in various age group competitions of the Cheshire Cup – a tournament held at a number of venues across the county.

The Under-seven squads both made the finals, one of only two clubs to do so, with the Lions winning the Cheshire Trophy.

The Wilmslow Bats were runners-up, and head coach Liam O’Doherty said: “This is a great introduction to the world of rugby for the children, and what a fantastic start.”

At Under-nine level the Wilmslow Wolves excelled in a tough group and they secured entry to the Cheshire Vase final where they beat Anselmians by four tries to one.

The Coyotes also played some brilliant rugby to finish second in their group and were unlucky to lose their semi-final to Bowdon.

Their coach, Ben Whitham, said: “This is a great confidence boost for both our teams, who have developed so much over the season.

“We have a very enthusiastic squad of players and, for the coaches involved, it is such a reward for us to see them all play so well.”
