MACCLESFIELD Boys' Boxing Club travelled to Everton Park in Liverpool for the finals of the North West Counties Junior ABA championship.

During 24 bouts of exceptional boxing, the region's best amateurs competed for a place in the North West team to face the London region at the York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Two of Macclesfield's lads had already earned their places as champions of the region.

Ian Barton won the North West Class 4 80kg championship, while the 'Pocket Rocket' Liam Hanarahan had taken the Class 6 57kg title.

The pair will be travelling to London for Friday's National quarter-finals.

Hoping to join them was Macclesfield's last competitor in the championships, Josh Spence from Wilmslow.

Having reached the final, Spence was to fight in the 75kg Class 6 group against Adam McElhinney from Rotunda ABC, arguably one of the best and most respected clubs in the Liverpool region.

The four-by-two-minute-round bout was the last of the day and the fighters were made to wait for seven hours, having weighed-in at 12.30pm and commenced battle at 7.30pm.

Despite the delay, this was an excellent bout from start to finish with Spence holding his own throughout the contest, even rocking his opponent in the second round, although the referee didn't give McElhinney a standing eight-count.

Although Spence's fitness showed through in the final round, the experienced McElhinney deservedly won his second North West title, by just three points.
