POYNTON High School’s Year 11 basketball team have gone one better in national competition than their Year 13 counterparts.

The talented squad followed the senior team into the National Schools' Open Cup competition.

Inspired by the success of the Year 13s, they reached the final eight, overcoming sides from all over the North of England in the process.

Their victories came against Catholic High School Chester, Matthew Moss High School in Manchester, North Chadderton High School, Lawnswood High School in Leeds and Stamford High School in Manchester.

The quarter-final saw Poynton travel to Lady Lumley School in Pickering, North Yorkshire, where they were defeated 91-49.

Coach Dave Thomson said: "This was a great effort on everyone's part in the squad. They were not a tall side and one of the reasons for their final exit from the competition was lack of height under the basket.

"The boys started playing for the school in Year Eight and have successfully won the local schools basketball league every year from Year 8 to Year 11.
