STYAL Golf Club was packed to the rafters to pay an emotional tribute to their superstar David Horsey.

Horsey, who ended his amateur career with a fine showing against the USA recently, received a five-minute standing ovation after thanking all of those who had helped him on his way to the ultimate amateur goal of Walker Cup selection a few weeks earlier.

After playing with Horsey and Styal’s director of golf, Glynn Traynor, in a club Texas Scramble Styal Captain Doug Roberts outlined the achievements of the 22-year-old who took up golf at the age of 14 with a 28 handicap.

Thanks to Horsey’s hard work and natural talent and help from many people this was quickly reduced to one and the successes began to accumulate at county, Alliance, national and international level with a string of prestigious titles to his name.

In the Walker Cup he was the top GB and Ireland scorer and turned professional the following week with a handicap of +5.5, making him the 11th ranked amateur in the world.

Horsey thanked all at Styal, particularly Glynn Traynor, head professional Simon Forrest and Neal Briggs from the European Tour.

He donated a framed set of Walker Cup memorabilia, which will take pride of place in the clubhouse.

A Seniors medal at Styal saw John Smith win a cpo on 71 from Terry Hanna with Ernie Knight a shot off the pace.

Sunday Stableford action at Styal had Richard Aldred top of the shop with 40 from Sam Howell 38 and Ron Long 36.

Cheshire junior star Zoe Evans has been in form in winning two singles Stablefords at Styal.

In the first she posted an impressive 39 to finish two points clear of Jackie Hodgetts and Gill Griffiths.

She was out on her own in the second with 37 points from Maragret Winterburn (33) and Pat Chadwick (32).

Winter stroke-play at Davenport saw Richard Downes take Division One with a 66 by a shot from Steve Johnson.

Chris Souter was a surprise winner in Division Two, romping home with 63 from Fred Donvaband (67).

Kevin Hope’s 66 saw him take Division Three on a cpo from David Tate.

Local ladies did well in the ELGA PING Grand Final at the Marriott Forest of Arden in Warwickshire.

From an original entry of more than 14,000, two local pairs came through regional qualifiers to make the last 48 in the final.

Kim Jackson and Carole Ryder of Tytherington posted a fine nett 70 to finish in third spot.

Kim 11 handicap paternered Cheshire star Carole off five handicap and she said: "We love the medal format as it keeps you on your toes, you have to keep going and there’s always an interest."

Also enjoying the final was Wilmslow’s Maureen Nicholson who was enjoyed success as joint winner of the putting challenge.

At Wilmslow, their ladies played a medal and, in a tight finish in Division One, Diana Beaumont won a cpo on 76 from Mary Rawsthorn, Hazel Baker and Janet Smith.

Moira Campbell was a clear winner in Division Two with her 72 leaving her clear of Joan McLeod and Jane Birkett.

The Crow Salver for Wilmslow’s men has been taken by Craig Morrow with his 288 total seeing him home from Carl Nowicki (298).Winter golf is now in full flow and will continue until next March.
