Styal schoolboy James Ratcliffe defied dreadful conditions  in Longford Park, Stretford,  to bring home three titles at the Greater Manchester and  Cheshire Athletics?Championships.

The 14-year-old won three golds in sprint competitions and  a silver in the javelin.

The wins mean he is now the Cheshire champion in three events in the Under-15 age group.

On day one he clocked 24.44sec in the 200m, a personal best, and took a second win in the 300m in a time of 39.07.

The following day, James clocked his second PB of the meeting with a winning time of 12.17 in the 100m.

The Manchester Grammar School student said “It’s brilliant to be called the fastest in Cheshire at one event. I never expected to win all three sprint competitions.

"I’m now looking forward to representing Cheshire in the Inter-Counties championships in Hull later in the summer as well as trying to qualify for the English Schools Athletics finals.

“I’ll be up against the best in the country in July.”
