The third Amy Watson Wright Charity Golf Day at Styal Golf Club, which raises funds for The Way Ahead and Childflight, proved to be an outstanding success that saw nearly £43,000 raised for the two charities.

Last year the day raised a superb £25,000 and Amy’s dad John, a PGA professional who works at Styal, vowed to exceed this amount.

But John and his family and the many people who provided prizes and support on the day were staggered by the final sum raised. John said: "It was just incredible and barely believable and on behalf of Amy, my wife Lydia, and daughter I can’t thank people enough for their generosity in making this day truly special in every way."

Ten-year-old Amy has been battling brain tumours for three years and has undergone more intensive treatment this year and she again chose these two charities because they are dear to her heart and her heartfelt speech moved the audience of over 220 who attended the charity dinner.

Dr Eddy Estlin, Amy’s consultant oncologist and chairman of ‘The Way Ahead’ and Pauline Sutherland, a director of Childflight also expressed their delight and thanks.

As well as the proceeds for the golf day and raffle there were some terrific auction prizes to bid for with the top amount of £6,000 coming for the morning in the talkSPORT Studios with Chris Evans and Ronnie Irani plus golf for two people at Wentworth.

Styal’s European Tour star David Horsey raised plenty of money from his ‘Beat the Pro’ challenge on the par-three 10th with seven players beating his tee shot to each win a magnum of champagne, David also contributing generously when beaten.

The top team of the day were the Four Amigos, who each drank a bottle of beer on each hole they played. They were top of the shop with 87 points and also won the best dressed team award.

A Wednesday medal at Styal produced a string of good scores, led in by junior Milo Keely who won a card play-off on 62 from Lee Mayoh.

Styal seniors showed their skills on their excellent par-three course, none more than winner David Fitzgerald with 45 points.

Styal ladies were in singles Stableford action and Enid Laverty was a clear winner with 41 points from Sue Grange (38).

Davenport’s men played over two rounds for captain Phil Rakestraw’s prize.

Winning with rounds of 75 and 76 in testing conditions was Mike Jones by a shot from Mike Bedford, who won a cpo from Malcolm Noden.

The best gross of 153 came from Chris Banfield after a cpo with Gary Cooney and the best round scores came from Noden and Alan Fletcher (both 67).

Macclesfield ladies played a Stableford to support Cancer Relief and in a tight finish Sheila Greenwood won a cpo on 35 points from Nora Pomfret.

Prestbury’s men played round two of the club championship and Cheshire star James Newton showed his class winning with a superb card, putting him two clear of Stuart Welch and Ken Williamson.

James was a comfortable winner of the scratch prize to become club champion with a total of 139 seeing him clear of Josh Garside (142) and Andrew Greenhalgh (144).

Prestbury ladies were in medal action and Alexandra Forbes took Division One with 67, three ahead of Sheila Bowie.

Glenys Smith topped Division Two with a neat 72, two fewer than Christine Smith, Jane Campaigne and Janet Taylorson.

A Seniors Stableford at Shrigley Hall had Brian Mountain out on his own with 36 points, three more than Mike Gates and Alan Worthington.

The draws have been made for the Manchester Alliance team club knock outs.
