A resurgent Wilmslow make it five wins in seven, but their defeat to Mossley in the cup semi-final left a sour taste in their mouths.
A stunning 126 from opening bat Rob Herriott, and 5-40 for Sandeep Yadala ensured Wilmslow comfortably beat Styal in Saturday’s derby.
A resurgent Wilmslow have now won five of the last seven but it would still need some extraordinary results, starting with a win at runaway leaders Holmes Chapel next week, to achieve anything other than a top four finish.
Declaring after 40 overs just three wickets down, the visitors reached 223 with both Toby Rowe and Patel reaching 40. Styal came out blazing, Vose with a quickfire 26, was Yadala’s first victim.
But a double wicket maiden for the same bowler staunched the flow and only Baig reached double figures as Styal were all out for 123.
The seconds lost their cup semi-final, but were convincing winners by 92 runs in the league.
On Saturday, Wirral had no answer to Simon Maynard’s 117 and Mark Green’s 48 as the home side posted 248-6.
In reply no Wirral batsman reached 30, as the Wilmslow attack shared the wickets.
The pick of the bowlers perhaps, was Aaron Carr, who took 2-31 on his return from injury while 15-year-olds Jonny Griffiths and Josh Baker took a wicket apiece.
The loss to Mossley in the cup was hugely frustrating.
Batting first, Wilmslow posted a modest 144. Mossley bided their time, kept wickets in hand and passed the target in the penultimate over.
It was a mature performance from a young Mossley team who simply waited for the bad ball, knowing the rate required was less than four an over.
Sam Rodman 2-21 and Imran Ashraf 1-12 kept Wilmslow in the game and – but for a few dropped catches – may have won it.
