Prestbury junior star James Newton gave further evidence of his outstanding talent by winning the Northern Order of Merit Hulbert Trophy.

The 16-year-old plus-one handicapper and England Under-18 squad member took on some of the best players in the North Region at Manchester Golf Club and posted a brace of 69s, each containing five birdies, for a six-under-par 138 to win by four shots from Styal’s young star James McCormick.

Newton took up the game at the age of eight at Macclesfield GC with his dad Clive where European Tour star Jamie Donaldson is attached and Donaldson caddied for him in the Open regional qualifier at Mere where he missed out by two shots.

James has just finished his GCSE exams at Tytherington High School and he will be continuing his studies there, but he is also looking to continue his golf development to the highest levels as he is tipped to be the area’s next David Horsey.

James made it a double celebration as his second round of 67 in the Prestbury club championship, added to his first round of 72, took him to the top of the leader board with a 139 total seeing him clear of Josh Garside (142) and Andrew Greenhalgh (144).

Prestbury ladies were in Par action and Nicky Markland led in Division One with a fine score of +6 giving her the edge over Helga Henry (+5) with Mary Staton (+3) also beating par.

Kate Coackley also posted +6 to win Division Two from Judith Durrant (+5) and Andrea Atherton (+4).

John Weaver and Ian Ashcroft (44pts) beat Mike Rigg and John Brooks (43pts) in Davenport’s Harry Boon Trophy.

Macclesfield juniors played for the Lady Captain’s Shield and Matt Salt had a fabulous return of 44 points to finish four clear of Ben Pritchard and Jonathan Emery.

Macc ladies played an EWGA medal and Jannie Ashworth led in with 76 from Sue Orwin (81).

A Sunday Stableford for Alderley Edge’s ladies was won by Anne Thornber with 31 points.

A Wednesday Stableford at Styal had junior Finn Keely in charge with 40 points, one more than Harry Dickson.

The second round of the club championship at Styal produced a string of good scores led in by another top junior Ryan Nevins with a scorching nett 60 seeing him well clear of Harry Sexton (66) with the lowest gross of 67.

Enid Laverty kept up her run of good form with Styal ladies winning an EWGA medal. Her 73 saw her home from Nancy Chorlton 75.

Shrigley Hall’s men played for the Summer Cup and Gary Wood was first past the post with 41 points from Andrew Taylor (40).
