Macclesfield Boys’ Boxing Club is hoping its current crop of fighters can add to Cheshire’s rich history in the ring.

The club’s base, the Cellar, is still a fledgling gym, but Macclesfield has a rich history of boxing, being a Cheshire hotbed in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Alban Mulrooney, Joey Dixon, Ernie Foden and Johnny Hough were the most renowned of those years.

And to date MBBC has a growing membership of more than 100 members – male and female – with a maturing stable of more than 20 junior and senior carded boxers.

Affiliated to the North West Counties ABA in 2003, Macclesfield had Liam Hanrahan reaching the 2008 Senior Novice final and Bete Bebbington took the CYP 81kg championship the following year. The pair are both expected to shine in this year’s ABA championships.

Also on the roster are 2010 schoolboy finalist Abraham Varey and highly rated young talent in the form of Liam Hinkley, Harry Thomson, Abraham Varey and Tommy Carter.

Among the team of coaches is Donna Shaw, thought to be the only female coach in the north west.

Training sessions are on Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays, 6pm til 7pm (jnr) 7pm til 8-15 (snr).
