It was a remarkable last day in the Cheshire County Premier League last Saturday as the title and relegation were decided in dramatic circumstances.

In the last to reach a conclusion, Alderley Edge played a full part in the relegation drama at Didsbury.

At 7.15pm – and with all other games in the Premier League long since finished – Alderley were bowling in the gloom, the last over of the 2012 season.

With two balls left, Didsbury needed two runs to win with one wicket left standing.

What made the circumstances even more dramatic was the fact that Didsbury had to get at least a run to avoid relegation to Division One but if a wicket fell, they would be down.

In the event the Didsbury tail-enders managed to scramble a single off the fifth ball of the over to bring the scores level.

They didn’t score off the last ball, making the match a level-scores draw.

Normally that would have meant Didsbury would be relegated as draw points were not enough to save them from relegation.

However, a County League rule gives teams who bat second in a level-scoring draw 18 points, moving Didsbury clear of the drop zone.

The celebrations from the home team went on long into the night but you had to feel sorry for Urmston, who were relegated as a result of this apparent points system anomaly.

Earlier Calum Rowe had made a fine 77 for Alderley, and with 36 from Adam Worrall, Edge had made 187 all out off their 55 overs.

That target was about par on a pitch which had considerable lateral movement for the bowlers.

There followed Didsbury’s dramatic innings with Edge’s top bowler, Jason Whittaker, taking one wicket to finish on 51, putting him third overall in the County Premier League wicket-takers.

In this match there was a fine spell of swing bowling by young Tom Foreman with 3-25, and Calum Rowe completed a superb match with 3-31.

With 31 victims, Edge wicketkeeper Worrall topped the final Premier League keeper’s table.

At the top of the league, Nantwich completed a hat-trick of titles with a dramatic comeback against Toft after being bowled out for 126, before dismissing their hosts for just 80.

So a fine season ended in memorable fashion with everybody already looking forward to the start of the 2013 season.
