There were plenty of thrills and spills over the two rounds played at Alderley Edge for their Captain Brian McGuire’s Prize.

Having led in the first round with an excellent 63, 20-handicapper Ian Broughton secured the prize with a second round of 71, despite the trauma of a nine on the 16th hole.

He edged across the line by one shot from Steve Lomas with Bill Fisher next in on 136.

The sixth hole in round one saw junior Tommy Lawton post his third ace of the season on his way to a gross 68.

In the Vice President’s Challenge Bowl at Alderley Edge the winner of the prize of a watch given since 1914 was Andy Slater, who won a card play-off on 65 from Tommy Lawton and Rick Ford.

In the Vice President’s own competition Jerry Dixon led in with a stunning 62.

A Sunday stableford at Mottram Hall was won by Daniel Castille with 41 points, six more than Bob Kwan.

Laurie Thornton was also a clear winner in a midweek medal at Mottram, with his 72 seeing him four shots clear of Daniel Castille.

Davenport’s men played for the President’s Prize over two rounds.

Taking top spot to win Mike Jones’ prize was Lawrence Hancock on 133, three clear of Kevin Martin.

The best gross of 147 came from Mark Richardson and the top round scores came from David Waldron-Kelly (64) and John Sturmey (67).

Davenport’s ladies also played for the President’s Prize in their own competition and it was won with a 66 from Lynda Lomax, while Jane Sykes had the best gross.

Macclesfield’s men played a 36-hole scratch medal and the top spot in Division One went to C Massey with his 142 seeing him eight shots clear of D Brereton.

It was tighter in Division Two with Peter Davies winning a cpo on 176 from Bill Barclay.

Macc ladies played a singles stableford with Mary Bacchus winning with 40 points from Pat Burrows (38).

Styal’s men enjoyed playing for the David Horsey Prize medal and none more so than Anthony Guy who romped to victory with a nett 60 with James McCormick (66), N Barker and Alistair Waddell (67) left in his wake.

A Sunday stableford at Styal saw Declan McKelvey win with 40 points from D Core (38) and Sam Howell (37).

Styal ladies played the latest round of the Summer Cup and Elaine Burgess led in with 20 points followed by Susannah Middleton (19).

A Thursday stableford for Styal’s ladies saw Sue Binks on top with 40 points from Laura Glennon (39) and Joan Doyle (38).

Gill Walmsley was the star at the Captain’s Day stableford at Styal with a massive 45 points seeing her home from Susannah Middleton (42).

Golfers looking for good days out can try two big events coming up with the first at Ashton-under-Lyne who are holding a special day for their up-and-coming star England star Matt Nixon.
