Oxford University’s star swimmer Thomas Booth made quite a splash at the recent Varsity match, breaking three records in a fantastic display in the pool.

The Oxford team outclassed their counterparts from Cambridge at the event, staged at the Rosenblatt pool, and the former Poynton High School pupil excelled as he set individual Varsity records in the 100m backstroke and freestyle races.

After shaving around two seconds off the backstroke best Booth, a former Stockport Metro swimmer, set a blistering 51.13sec in the freestyle event.

He then turned team player as he formed a quarter of the medley relay team. With the match already won by the dark blues, the four-strong team set an incredible time of 3min 29.91sec, to shave 12 seconds off the existing best.

Aided by the fine efforts of Booth, a former Commonwealth Youth Games competitor, the victory went to Oxford.

Although Cambridge won the women’s event, Oxford dominated in the men’s and their 58-32 was enough to seal their third victory in a row, 97-83 the final overall score.
