BRAMHALL professional Richard Green is the proud new captain of the Manchester and District Alliance.

Green, one of the most respected professionals in the area, said: "It is a great honour to be captain of the biggest and most active Alliance in the country with over 110 member clubs within a 35-mile radius of Manchester.

"It has distinguished life members such as Denis Durnian, Derrick Cooper, Andrew Murray and David Screeton and it provides a range of competitions for over 60,000 players on a regular basis."

As well as the winter programme, which takes place mainly on Wednesdays, the Alliance provides club team competitions for men, mixed and juniors throughout the summer.

The Dunham Forest Trophy competition gives professionals a chance to play at a high level for their club.

Application forms for competitions are sent to all of the clubs and details can also be found on the websites www.mdga.org.uk or www.wgtbgolf.co.uk .

Green added: "The professionals are well catered for with their match play competition, which I sponsor but have never won despite being in the final eight times, and the stroke play competition and an Order of Merit.

"Last year we introduced an Order of Merit for amateurs and we also instigated a National Inter Alliance competition five years ago.

"This year we have introduced a Champion Club Trophy, provided by Peter Myers (an Alliance regular from Bramhall) which involves an aggregate accumulation of points from club pairs who play in the weekly competitions.

"So far Shrigley Hall are leading the way with a string of consistent results."

Stableford action at Styal had David Caddick romping home to a comfortable victory with 41 points in division one.

He was three points clear of Harry Reid, with Terry Hanna a further point off the pace.

Steve Weaver was the winner in division two with his 35 points edging him home from David Williamson 34.

A Seniors Bogey at Styal was won by Brian Dononhue with +2 from the consistent David Marriott +1 and Ernie Knight and Bob Clayton level par.
