A CORNERSTONE of Macclesfield Hockey Club has been named as the district’s top sports coach for 2008.

Vicky Jackson was voted as coach of the year for her commitment and dedication in improving the skills of the club’s many junior players.

Vicky was narrowly edged into second place in the Cheshire county awards.

Taking on the coaching role two years ago, she has built the junior section of the club into a roaring success. Junior training on Sunday mornings regularly see in excess of 70 juniors, aged between nine and 15 years old, practising.

The Victoria Road-based club currently enters five junior teams in the Greater Manchester League and popularity of hockey is on the rise in the town.

Presenting her with a bouquet of flowers to show the club’s recognition of her achievements, chairman Simon Yates said: "Everyone involved in the club knows the hard work Vicky puts into running our junior section.

"We are thrilled that she has been given this award as it highlights the ongoing success of the club and how we positively interact with the local community."

Macclesfield Hockey Club runs three mens, two ladies, a boys ‘Badgers’ team, and five junior teams.

As well as the junior training on Sunday the senior teams train on Tuesday nights 7-9pm at Tytherington High School and are always looking extend a welcome to new members of any age.
