Gary Simpson won’t be out to splash the cash when the January transfer window opens this week.

Macclesfield made a bright start to the season but they’ve fallen away in recent weeks, thanks primarily to a dearth of points and goals in league action.

But there’ll be no panic buying at the Moss Rose this winter, as their priority could be retaining the services of their top young prospects, especially defender Elliott Hewitt.

The right-back, still only 17 and holder of the record for the youngest Silkman to feature in the Football League, has barely played a game without a host of scouts eyeing his progress, but Simpson insists that an approach – from any quarter – has yet to be made.

"I know there has been a hell of a lot of interest in Elliott but he’s only just come back from his groin injury," said the Macc manager.

"He’s had a couple of training sessions and we put him on the bench today (against Rotherham United).

"But if somebody wants what potentially could be another Gareth Bale – which I think the kid is – then they need to show us the colour of their money. If they do, then you never know, the kid may move."

As far as bringing in reinforcements goes, the ever-canny Simpson will be assessing the situation throughout the month before deciding wherer, or indeed if, he needs to use up what resources the Silkmen do have in the coffers.

"Any players coming in depends on what state we’re in with the squad," he added. "We’ve got one or two coming back to fitness and I’ve tried to save a little bit of money by sending back the two loan lads from Chesterfield (Scott Boden and Dan Gray).

"We’ve got one or two out on loan, so it depends on who, if anyone, we lose.

"If we do then I might have to do something, but we’ll always cut our cloth accordingly."
