IT was a night to remember for Macc fans as legendary boss Sammy McIlroy returned to the Moss Rose.

McIlroy, fondly remembered as the man who brought league football to Macc Town, offered his thoughts and memories from that golden era, and a few of the players who represented the club with pride also turned out.

As well as Sammy’s question-and-answer main event, there were also appearances from some of the much-loved players from that time.

And Macc’s assistant manager, Efe Sodje, who organised the event, said he was delighted by the support that saw the suite that bears Sammy’s name packed out.

“It was a wonderful night, I’m really happy with the support that the fans showed,” Sodje (below, enjoying his evening) said. “We had around 130 there, which really wasn’t bad, I think it was a good turnout and they were treated to a great night, that’s the feedback I’ve heard anyway.

“I rang a few of the lads, like Gil Prescott, Neil Howarth, Phil Power and Tinno (Darren Tinson) to see if they’d do us a favour and come along and they were all up for it.”

As well as stoking a host of memories the evening raised vital money for club funds.

And John Askey’s right-hand man admits he’s still relishing the challenge of living up to the ‘Against All Odds’ mantra, adding: “We know we’re up against it, budget-wise, we always are, but it only makes me and Johnny (Askey) battle harder and I think that translates to the players, who give it everything they’ve got too.”
