GRAHAM Potter has revealed the secret behind his unexpected departure from Moss Rose.

The Silkmen wing-back was one of nine players shown the door by Brian Horton. And Potter, 30, was told it was because the Macclesfield boss wanted a ébetter defenderé.

éThe manager said my defensive qualities were not up to standard and thatés his call,é he said. éHe wanted a better defender.é

But Horton has stated it was York-based Potterés living arrangements which had had a major influence on his decision.

Horton said: éHe travels from York every day and that is not an ideal situation. These decisions are not always just football ones.é

Potter joined Macc from Boston in February 2004 and helped the Cheshire club beat the drop last term. But, despite grabbing eight goals in 60 appearances for the Silkmen, including six last season, the former Southampton and York defender was not surprised not to be offered a new deal.

He admitted: éI was expecting it in a little way - ités not a massive shock. Iém 30 and have been in the game long enough to know when a manager likes the way you play and the when he doesnét.

éIt was the mangerés decision and he is paid to make those decisions. He didnét really speak to me or mention a new contract, so I was expecting it.

éBut I can hold my head up high for what Iéve done for the club. I helped get the club out of trouble last year and turned it into a play-off force.é
