A blustery day on Bollington Rec caused the Bruce no end of problems as they conceded five in the first half against Queens Macc who had the wind in the first half.

Three quick goals came within the first 25 minutes for the Queens through Dave Short, Craig Hayes, and a volley into the top corner by Ben Hamand.

The remainder of the first half was played inside the Bruce’s half as Queens Macclesfield picked their way through the Bruce defencend on the half-hour mark Short scored his second for the day.

He completed a first-half hat-trick from the spot, dispatching a penalty after his break into the box saw him brought down.

The Bruce did score through Scott Merzaros, whose whipped-in corner caught in the wind and deceived the keeper.

Queens coped better against the wind in the second half as they pushed back the Bruce. Although the football was not as free flowing both teams carried on playing it on the ground.

Fifteen minutes from time another surging run from Short set up Hamand for his second of the day and then Short set up Ryan Stewart to make it 7-1.

With time running out the Bruce pushed on and gained some reward on just before the end, Nick Dobson’s half-volley flying past the stranded Queens keeper to make the final score 7-2.

In the Macclesfield and Dist Sunday League Cup quarter-final Golden Lion exited their second cup competition in as many weeks with a 2-0 defeat at Pack Horse.

In similar conditions to the previous weekend’s game at Mary Dendy Fields (see left) the first half was a fairly tight affair, with little chances at either end.

The best of was entrusted to Nick Ward from the spot after Jamie Collins hacked down Simon Band in the box. However, the usually reliable Ward’s tame penalty was saved by the Lion keeper to keep the score at 0-0 going in to half time.

In the second half, Pack began to turn the screw, dominating possession and crafting out several good chances.

However, on 60 minutes Lion came closest with their first real chance of the game, Simon Gibbons striking the ball through a crowd of players, only to be cleared off the line by a fantastic dive from Pack defender Nick Stone.

Ten minutes later the deadlock was broken. Jordan Leigh latched on to a Lee Malkin cross and volleyed in off the post to give the Pack a 1-0 lead.

With 10 minutes to go in the game, Malkin skipped past two defenders to go one on one with the Lion goalkeeper only to be hacked down by a Lion defender.

Malkin stepped up to take the penalty himself and calmly slotted in to the net giving the Pack a 2-0 victory and a spot in the semi-final.
