Former Macc midfielder John Rooney has made the switch to the Major Soccer League, joining New York Red Bulls.

The 20-year-old, who left Macc after rejecting a contract offer in the summer, was signed by the Bulls in the second round of the MSL’s ‘Superdraft.’

He will team up with a World Cup winner in the Big Apple, as Arsenal legend Thierry Henry signed from Barcelona last year.

The New York team’s head coach, Hans Backe, admitted he was surprised that Rooney hadn’t been snapped up in the first round, adding: "He has a good understanding of the game and he’s an excellent passer of the ball. I rate him very highly."

Rooney had trained with Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers after trials with Championship and League One sides last season.

ANOTHER former Silkmen plying his trade in a different country found the net on his league debut. Cardiff City’s new signing, Jon Parkin, found the net with a delightful volley against Norwich City following his January switch from Preston. ‘The Beast’ hit a club record 26 goals for Macc in the 2004/05 season.
