Defender Tony Diagne has signed a contract extension at Macclesfield.

The 21-year-old, who came to the Moss Rose from French fourth-tier side FC Municipal d'Aubervilliers in Paris, made 20 outings for the Silkmen last season.

Diagne is now contracted until the end of the 2012/13 season, after his initial early promise saw him originally extend his deal until summer 2012.

Diagne, who plied his trade alongside Emile Sinclair and Hamza Bencherif in Nottingham Forest’s youth system, scored on his first start for Gary Simpson’s men at Hereford United, and marked his new deal with a goal in Macc’s 3-1 pre-season win at Buxton on Saturday. "He's a good player who has really come on since he joined us last season.

"I'm pleased to have been able to offer him this extra year as it offers him some stability and allows him to focus on the football more," said Simpson.

"He also acts as some security to keep the young players like this happy and tied to the club.

"He did very well for us last season and he’s a player I think is capable of going on to play at a higher level."

Diagne himself was thrilled to have committed to the Moss Rose club for another 12 months.

"I’m really pleased to have signed a new deal.

"I’ve enjoyed my time here so far and everything has been going well here for me so I’m looking forward to having another year."

Meanwhile, Macclesfield have been handed a bye in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The Silkmen reached round two with victory over Morecambe last season before exiting the competition at the hands of Crewe but they will join the Shrimpers in round two this time around.

The other six bypassing round one in the northern section are Rochdale, Oldham, Preston, Chesterfield, Notts County and Rotherham.

The provisional date for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round draw is Saturday, August 13. The draw is set to be made on live on Sky Sports on Soccer AM.
