Club AZ made history last Saturday when they became the first Macclesfield side to win the Cheshire League’s division one title.

They had gone into the match against Gamesley buoyed by a 2-1 midweek success over Eagle Sports with Lee Malkin and Duncan Warrender finding the net.

They started Saturday’s match with serious intent, creating several chances thanks to some sharp football.

However, it was Gamesley who took the lead when their striker latched onto a long ball over the top and made no mistake with the finish.

Five minutes later, the combination of a long ball and strong wind allowed them to double their advantage.

AZ looked to be heading into half-time with it all to do until Warrender collected the ball on the left-hand side and beat three men before firing into the top corner.

With their belief restored, AZ were revitalised after the break and their pressure was rewarded on the hour when Nick Stone headed home the equaliser.

With title glory in their sights, AZ went close on several occasions before their pressure was rewarded in stoppage time.

Despite taking a heavy touch, Malkin forced a save from the Gamesley keeper but Craig Scott was on hand to volley home the title-clinching goal.

They complete their fixtures at Alderley Park on Wednesday where they will be presented with the championship trophy. Kick-off is 6.30pm and all are welcome.
