Macclesfield Town captain Paul Turnbull admits he was delighted with victory in a game he’d have taken a point from, and Bully’s eyeing promotion in this ongoing season of disbelief.
With two goals in a couple of minutes at Kidderminster three points was a welcome bonus from a gritty afternoon’s work on a treacherous pitch. It was straight back in at the deep end for Macc, who’d had a well-earned fortnight to rest and recuperate.
“The break did us good, definitely,” said the 25-year-old, now in his second season as John Askey’s on-field leader.
“We’ve had two weeks off and to be honest it was a long break, we wanted a game in between but we’ve had that two weeks’ rest and come out and won today so we can’t ask for anything more.
“It was heavy going on that pitch but you’re going to get that in the Conference, I’m sure we’ll get a few more like that before the end of the season. Being honest I would have taken a point at half-time, I thought they were the better side in the first half.
“They pressed us really high and we didn’t have much time on the ball but in the second half we had a fair few chances and took the two main ones – and we won, that’s the main thing.
“After that Grimsby win the boys were flying, they wanted more games to come but we had that two weeks’ rest – maybe it’s helped us so we can’t complain, it was a big win, the lads were fantastic.”
Turnbull is clearly one to share the plaudits that have been coming their way all year and was quick to praise the efforts of the five men behind him, as well as a youngster who made an impressive return alongside him after a long injury lay-off.
“Paul (Lewis) has done very well today, he’s not had a game for about four months now so it’s good for him to get 90 minutes under his belt – he did really, really well.
“We’ve conceded a few from set-pieces this season but Rhys (Taylor) was great. He’s had a fantastic season and obviously he’s had interest in him but he wants to carry on here and get promotion with Macclesfield.
“Defensively we’ve been fantastic, we’ve been better than last season but it’s credit to Pilks, Scotty, Hallsy and Alex for staying strong and not conceding.
“We were never in much danger at the back against Kidderminster but I don’t think we’ve been caused that many problems at the back all year.”
And with two wins from two in 2015 Bully himself is still harbouring hopes of leading the club’s return to the Football League.
“To be honest I’ve not had any calls, I’ve not heard anything about me going anywhere,” he revealed, although his performance over the last 18 months must surely have alerted the circling vultures higher up the leagues.
“I’m here for a reason, I’m happy to be here and I’m going to do a job for the team and try to get promoted this season.”
