The Silkmen had won just one match throughout 2016 until last month, with the team plummeting down the table.

A change in fortunes means they have now picked up three straight victories, leaving them nine points from the play-offs.

With only five matches remaining though, Askey believes it could be too little too late.

“I think the season is full of what ifs, but it’s just a shame in January and February we let it slip, it was out of our hands

having one or two players injured,” he said.

“We’ve got to look

forward now and hopefully we can keep winning and not lose until the end of the season and you never know, football’s a funny game, if teams above us start losing then you just never know.”

Macc’s latest win came on Saturday when they picked up a 3-1 victory over Braintree Town.

The Silkmen took the lead through Danny

Whitaker from the penalty spot in the 25th minute, before Danny Rowe

doubled the lead just after the break.

John McCombe got the third before Braintree scored a consolation goal late on through Simeon Akinola, and Askey was pleased with his side’s efforts after a slow start.

“We were very lethargic to start off with, especially in the first 20 minutes,” he said.

“Once we got the goal we played well for another 40 minutes so I’m really pleased with the attitude of the players and to get the win.”

Askey was also full of praise for goalscorer Rowe who he believes is

destined for big things.

“Danny Rowe’s shown this last few weeks what we all know he can do. I just hope now he can

continue and his career goes upwards,” he said.

“He’s got everything you could want for a footballer, he’s brave, he’s strong, he is very quick and good on the ball.”

Macc’s recent revival has coincided with the defensive pairing of McCombe and George Pilkington, and Askey has been impressed with the duo.

“George looks renewed playing alongside him, and the two of them have formed a good partnership,” he said. “Obviously it’s nice to see McCombe score and he’s done fantastically since he’s come in and he’s given the team a big lift.”
