League leaders Oxton came to Alderley last Saturday looking to extend their winning start to the season, while Edge were hoping to record their first win with the weather cold but dry at Moss Lane.

Oxton won the toss and decided to field first with Edge batting on a reasonable-looking track – but still with some movement after an incredibly wet start to the 2012 league season.

After the loss of a couple of early wickets, new signing Calum Rowe played an excellent innings of 41 for Edge the day before he made his debut for Cheshire in minor county cricket.

It was a solid innings of 88 balls and helped to get Edge to 109-5 in the 36th over.

With maximum batting points at 220 runs this season that particular target looked a long way off but number six Charlie Reid played one of his best innings for Edge.

Some glorious shots helped him to make an undefeated 60 with an extra cover drive for six in the last over undoubtedly the shot of the day.

A tea score of 190-8 from their 55 overs looked 30 runs short of par but the Oxton attack had featured current Worcestershire professional, Gareth Andrew, and ex-Lancashire Test international Lou Vincent, so perhaps the total was a better performance than it initially looked.

Oxton’s batting always looked like it was keeping ahead of the target run-rate but the visitors were indebted to two of their lesser known players.

Stephen McGenity and Andrew Gibson both made half-centuries and secured a victory that kept Oxton top of the table with a 100 per cent record after three fixtures.

Reid was Edge’s best bowler with 2-45 from 12 overs as they took six points to Oxton’s 25, leaving them just above the relegation places.

Edge did make progress however in two other competitions last week.

They posted a victory over Stockport in the league’s Twenty20 competition.

That was followed by another win in the National Club knockout competition against Liverpool Competition side Wavertree last Sunday.
