Alderley Edge’s vital victory at Neston last Saturday saw them leap up to fifth in the table and in with an outside chance of challenging for the Cheshire County Premier League title with six games left to play.

While other teams were again frustrated by thunderstorms that hit much of Cheshire, the weather on the Wirral was largely fine with only 20 minutes lost to the rain.

This proved crucial to Edge’s victory as any overs lost would have come out of the second innings when Alderley batted.

Neston batted first and found it difficult to get the run rate up to set what would have been a challenging target.

Only opener Andy Murphy (77) made a significant contribution as Edge’s spinners did the damage, Charlie Reid and Mark Warnes taking four wickets.

Edge were indebted to skipper Alan Day (41) as he held the innings together and, although they slipped to 123-6, Adam Wildig and man-of-the-match Reid added 72 for victory.
