An elderly woman involved in a canal boat accident has died, police have confirmed.

The 80-year-old woman, who has not been named, fell into the Macclesfield Canal at Lyme Green and became trapped beneath her boat yesterday morning (July 13).

She was pulled free by members of the public and police officers pulled her from the water.

Despite the efforts of doctors at Macclesfield Hospital she died today.

The woman’s husband was on the vessel at the time of the accident, between bridges 46 and 47.

The couple are not from the local area.
