A veteran councillor is stepping down after 37 years of service to the town.

Carolyn Andrew first got involved in local government in 1976 when she was elected to Macclesfield borough council.

She went onto serve her community until the formation of Cheshire East Council in 2009.

Since then the Conservative councillor has represented Macclesfield West and Ivy ward.

The 81-year-old has now decided to pass the baton to other community-minded people.

Coun Andrew, who is currently deputy mayor for Macclesfield, said: “I’ve always been interested in helping people.

“I was one of those people who rather than complain about something, I would do something about it.

“It has been a very rewarding role but after a period of ill health I’ve decided to retire gracefully.”

Coun Andrew, a former radiographer at Macclesfield Hospital, now plans to spend her time volunteering.

In tribute leader of Cheshire East Council councillor Michael Jones is campaigning for Coun Andrew to be given the civic honour of Freeman of the Borough.

Councillor Jones said Coun Andrew is one of six “exceptional” councillors standing down in May who are to be nominated for the honour.

He said: “Their achievements have made a significant difference to our landscape and this would be the most fitting way to say thank you.

“I have made this recommendation because these fellow councillors I intend to nominate, fully deserve this honorary recognition for their exemplary commitment and service to the Borough and to the residents of Cheshire East.”

The last people to received the honour were Sarah Storey, Victoria Pendleton, Ben Ainslie and Beth Tweddle, Olympians and Paralympians who excelled in the 2012 Olympic Games.
