A charity walk resulted in the dramatic rescue of a woman who fell and broke her ankle.

More than 500 adults and children took part in the Starlight Walk at Capesthorne Hall, Siddington, for East Cheshire Hospice.

But the annual event which involved a candlelit 2.5km walk at night ended prematurely and in agony for a 55-year-old woman who slipped on muddy ground.

Paramedics from North West Ambulance Service were unable to get to the patient and called in its Hazardous Area Response Team from Liverpool.

The rescue also involved 15 members of the Buxton Mountain Rescue Team who assisted with moving the casualty.

She was transferred to Macclesfield Hospital with a fracture of her lower leg.

East Cheshire Hospice has promised a review of the accident.

A spokesman said: “Unfortunately one of our walkers slipped and fell on the third circuit of the 2.5k woodland walk.

“The injured walker sustained a broken ankle and we were very grateful for the rapid and professional response from the on-site first aiders and the Ambulance Service who were called in to ensure that the patient was safely transported for treatment.

“The woodland walk format was very popular with our participants, however the weather conditions on the night were very difficult.

“We will review the unfortunate accident to determine if there are any lessons to be learnt, we will also review the response of our on-site first aid team and the external paramedics.

A spokesman for the rescue team said: “The walk is hardly mountainous, but the hall’s grounds are a dark and lonely place on a wet cloudy night. Ground conditions were very wet and a simple slip resulted in the walker suffering an injury.”
