A war veteran is calling for residents to make a special effort to attend this Sunday’s Remembrance Services, as the town marks the centenary of the First World War.

Tom Robinson, 94, who served on the WW2 Arctic Convoys, pictured, said: “This year more than ever people should turn out and show their respects of those who gave the utlimate sacrifice for this town and our country, as well as show their support of our serving servicemen and women.”

  • In Macclesfield the parade leaves the Town Hall to Park Green at 10.40am before a Service of Remembrance at 11.10am.
  • In Bollington a parade leaves Adlington Road at 10.40am for a 10.55am service at the memorial gardens.
  • In Rainow there is a church service at 10am, with parade leaving at 10.40am and a two-minute silence at 11am.
  • Prestbury’s veterans will parade from Shirley’s Close to St Peter’s Church for a service at 10.30am.
  • Gawsworth’s parade and service will start at 10.30am from Congleton Road to Church Lane.
  • Calvary Pentecostal Church on the Weston estate is inviting those who have lost anyone in military service, to bring a photo of them to its memorial service at 10.30am.
  • St Peter’s Church on Windmill Street, Macclesfield, is staging an exhibition of war stories and memorabilia this weekend.
  • St Michael’s Church in Macclesfield is launching an exhibition and memorial to the 569 named people on the church’s war memorial plaque. It will run from Monday, November 10, to Saturday, November 16, from 10am to 2pm.
