Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating a remarkable milestone today as she turns 90.

And to celebrate such an important birthday, we've put together a gallery of pictures of the Queen reflecting some of the biggest events throughout her life, including coronations, her wedding to Prince Philip and the birth of her children; Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Andrew, Duke of York and Edward, Earl of Wessex.

Aside from her family, there are other big moments in the Queen's life that we have included such as her first public speech which was broadcast on Children's Hour, her participation in the Trooping the Colour ceremonies, and her many royal visits to various parts of the world.

May 1 1926

Baby Princess Elizabeth of York was born on April 21 1926 in London. She was the first child of Albert, Duke of York (later to be King George VI)and his wife Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. They also had another daughter, Queen Elizabeth's younger sister, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.

May 3 1928

At just two years old, the young princess was already accustomed to greeting the crowds and her royal wave was established early on.

November 6 1935

The young Elizabeth was called Lilibet by her family. Here she is pictured aged 9. Her cousin Margaret Rhodes described her as a "jolly little girl, but fundamentally sensible and well-behaved".

May 12 1937

Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II) and her mother (later the Queen Mother) proudly wore their royal crowns whilst on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the coronation of King George VI in May 1937.

October 13 1940

Her first ever broadcast from Windsor Castle in October 1940 was on Children's Hour when she was 14. The teenaged Elizabeth addressed her speech to children living away from home because of World War II, saying: “To you, living in new surroundings, we send a message of true sympathy and at the same time we would like to thank the kind people who have welcomed you to their homes in the country.”

She finished with the words: “Goodnight, and good luck to you all.”

January 1 1942

She became a Girl Guide back in 1937 when she was just 11 years old. Her sister, Princess Margaret was a Brownie and the Queen Mother became the Patron of the Girl Guides.

November 20 1947

Here is the Queen as a radiant 21-year-old bride marrying Prince Philip of Greece who she first met in 1934. Philip was her third cousin who had joined the British Royal Navy, and served during World War II.

December 15 1948

She became a mother for the first time when she had Prince Charles in November 1948. She and Prince Philip then had three more children; Anne, Princess Royal; Andrew, Duke of York and Edward, Earl of Wessex.

June 2 1953

Elizabeth became Queen of England in 1952, when her father King George VI died of lung cancer. Here she is pictured at her coronation the following year in Westminster Abbey wearing the St. Edward Crown and carrying the Sceptre and the Rod.

December 25 1957

Today, the Queen's Christmas Day speech is watched on television by millions of people. Her first television broadcast back in 1957 was filmed in the Long Library at Sandringham, where she was pictured holding the copy of Pilgrim's Progress, from which she read a few lines during her message.

June 2 1959

The Queen enjoys walking in the countryside and spending time with her dogs. She has owned a Corgi since she was given one named Susan for her 18th birthday. Here she is pictured with one named Sugar.

May 18 1961

Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales are pictured here out riding at Windsor Castle. Riding and horses have been two of the her interests for years now and she annually attends the Derby at Epsom and the Summer Race Meeting at Ascot.

November 3 1964

Queen Elizabeth made her mark as monarch and always dresses to impress. Here she is pictured at the State Opening of Parliament, an annual event which marks the formal start of the parliamentary year, with the Queen's Speech setting out the government's agenda for the coming session.

June 1 1967

Queen Elizabeth II at the garden party in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London, to mark the 50th anniversary of women in active service, during the Second World War.

April 21 1968

July 1 1969

Queen Elizabeth II formally investing her son Prince Charles with the Coronet of the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Caernarfon castle. He actually took on the title when he was nine, but the Queen insisted the ceremony should wait until he fully understood its significance.

September 1 1972

Queen Elizabeth II is pictured away from London at Balmoral in the year of her silver wedding anniversary. When she goes away to Balmoral or Sandringham, she still receives official papers nearly every day.

June 29 1977

The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1977, when she had served as Queen for 25 years. Here she is pictured on a walk-about in Portsmouth during her Silver Jubilee tour of Great Britain.

January 10 1983

She has visited many countries while carrying out her Royal visits and here she is pictured inspecting the Guard of Honour at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya.

December 21 1984

The Queen has eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Here she is pictured at Prince Harry's christening with The Queen Mother, Prince Charles, the late Princess Diana and Prince William.

June 15 1985

Queen Elizabeth II taking the salute of the Household Guards regiments during the Trooping the Colour ceremony, an annual event which takes place to mark the Queen's official birthday.

March 20 1995

After arriving in Cape Town in 1995, the first time she had been in the country since 1947, the Queen greeted South Africa's President Nelson Mandela. She stepped off the royal yacht Britannia to mark the official start of her visit.

July 23 2000

Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother were incredibly close and almost in daily contact with each other. The Queen Mother died in 2002 aged 101.

February 6 2002

In 2002, the Queen had reigned for 50 years and celebrated her Golden Jubilee. She visited various parts of the world including different cities in Britain. Here she is pictured in Liverpool at the Walker Art Gallery.

April 20 2006

It doesn't seem 10 years ago that the Queen, looking lovely in yellow, was pictured sitting in the Regency Room at Buckingham Palace in London looking at some of the cards which have been sent to her for her 80th birthday.

President Sarkozy of France visited for two days back in 2008, and was treated to a state banquet at Windsor Castle which as always, was a grand spread fit for a Queen!

Queen Elizabeth celebrated 60 years on the throne in 2012. She embarked on a Royal Visit to mark the incredible occasion, and here she is pictured visiting Newcastle, when she and Prince Philip officially opened the second Tyne Tunnel.

The Queen became a Bond girl as she appeared with 007 actor Daniel Craig in a surprise video for the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

The Queen's royal visit to Howe Barracks in Canterbury, Kent, saw her joining The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (5 SCOTS) for a group photograph.

October 10 2014

In 2014, actress Angelina Jolie (right) was presented with the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George by Queen Elizabeth II in the 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace, London.

September 9 2015

On September 9 2015, Queen Elizabeth became the longest reigning monarch having served 23,226 days, 16 hours and approximately 30 minutes - surpassing the reign of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. On the day she travelled on a steam train with Prince Philip to inaugurate the new Scottish Borders Railway, as Scotland has remained a special place for her throughout her 90 years, home to key events, regular visits and - of course - family holidays
