A public art project which transformed a dark and dingy underpass into a colourful throughfare has bigger and brighter ambitions.

The Macclesfield Brick Project saw the decoration of 1,600 tiles down one side of the subway beneath Park Lane, with artists from the town spending a week helping would-be artists create their mini masterpieces.

The project has been deemed so successful that the same thing will be attempted on the other wall of the subway.

Between Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, September 4, artists Dan Petley, Tom Heaton, Mel Alexandrou, Lottie Pencheon, Harry Westbrook, Caitlin Line, Jane Osmond and Mike Pritchard will be on hand to help people leave their mark on any one of the 1,600 bricks on the opposite side.

Pete Turner, clerk of Macclesfield Town Council, which organised the project, said: “This was an idea brought to the council by Councillor Neil Puttick, who worked very hard to bring together a team of professional artists to facilitate the project and also ensured there was enough paint and expertise so that as many people as possible could take part.

“The only problem was that we ran out of bricks, so we are now coming back to do the other side.

“Anyone can take part, you don’t have to book a space, come along on one of the days between 11am and 6pm and all the materials are provided and you can, if you want, get some help from one of the on-hand professional artists.”

During the first part of the project, dozens of people got involved including Sutton Guides, Macclesfield Mayor Councillor Alift Harewood and the Parachute group at SUSO, as well as pupils at Parkroyal and Macclesfield Academy.

Fiona Wilson and her husband Brian Puddicombe marked their 24th wedding anniversary by painting bricks.

Some people painted their names, others painted images which represent local landmarks.

Coun Puttick said he was thrilled at the success of the first wall.

He added: “There was a lovely level of engagement with the community, which is exactly what we wanted. It has shown us that people want community art and we will use this as a catalyst for future projects, especially post-Barnaby Festival.”
