The headteacher of Poynton High School has praised students for their ‘truly fantastic’ GCSE results.

The school celebrated 71 percent of students gaining the national benchmark of 5 A*-C grades including Mathematics and English.

Almost 10 percent of all grades were A*.

In nine subjects at least 90 percent of students got A*-C grades.

Among the highlights at the school was that 95 percent of students got A*-C in biology and chemistry, 85 percent A*-C in English Literature, 85 percent A*-C in history, 82 percent A*-C in geography, 90 percent A*-C in physics, 80 percent A*-C in French, German and Spanish.

Headteacher David Waugh, said: “It is wonderful to see such amazing results and individual success stories. With approaching 10 percent of all our GCSE examinations being graded at the very prestigious A* Grade and approximately 40 percent of students achieving the gold standard English Baccalaureate we are once again celebrating the outstanding achievement by our students.

“All of our staff and governors are so very proud of each and every student – they have done themselves, and their families, proud.”

There were 33 students who gained at least 8 GCSEs graded at A and A*.

Top of the class was Joseph Parker who gained an A* in all 11 of his GCSEs, closely followed by Isabel Mawhood who gained 10 A*s, a grade A and a double starred distinction for Computing/ICT.

Other notable achievers were Gloria Chan, who gained 8A*2A and Thomas Holmes went one better with 8A*3A grades.

Sarah Brighton, Thomas Holmes, Alex Kirkham, Jayme Leigh, Isabel Mawhood and Joseph Parker all gained at least 11 GCSEs graded at A or A* with Lydia Atha, Gloria Chan, Alistair Greenwood, Katie Grimsditch, Calum Kendal-Sadiq, Olivia Turner, Phillip Wadley and Antonia White gaining at least 10 GCSEs graded A or A*.

A special mention went to Ben Johns who achieved 4A*3As despite his health battle with Crohns Disease, a long-term condition that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive system.
