Ale fans consumed 14,000 pints at a bumper Macclesfield Beer Festival.

Around 4,000 people attended the event at Macclesfield Rugby Club over Friday and Saturday night, and a free daytime session on Saturday too. Revellers enjoyed beers, ales, ciders and perrys from across the UK plus a selection of wines,

There were 220 barrels of beer consumed - equivalent to 14,000 pints - as well as 50 barrels of cider and 300 bottles of wine.

But the 21st annual event was not just about the booze, with money raised on the weekend going to support East Cheshire Hospice.

Ben Whiteley, chairman of Macclesfield Round Table, who organises the event with Mickey Jones, owner of PR Jones jewellers, said: “We had a few hundred more people than last year and had more food on offer which was a great success, and a chance to promote local food businesses.”

Visitors enjoyed live music from bands Monkey Harris and The Big Jam and acoustic sets from local singers Charlie White, Helen Walford and Joe Barker, as well as family entertainment.

Ben said: “It was a fantastic weekend. There was a real party atmosphere.”
