A man has been arrested after leading police on an hour-long 17 mile car chase.

Cheshire Police attempted to stop a Black Renault Clio on the A34 near Marton at 11.30pm last night (August 3).

But the driver failed to stop and instead drove off towards Macclesfield.

NPAS Barton, the police helicopter, was called out to help track the car.

Witnesses reported seeing the chopper above the Hallefield Road and Union Road areas in the south of the town.

The chase continued towards Wilmslow and came to and end on Mobberley road at 12.30am.

The driver, a 31-year-old man from Wythenshawe, was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and drug driving.

He is currently in police custody.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “At approximately 11.30pm on Wednesday 3rd August officers attempted to stop a Black Renault Clio travelling southbound on the A34 near Congleton.

“The vehicle failed to stop so officers followed the vehicle at a safe distance and at approximately 00.30 the vehicle was stopped on Mobberley Road, Wilmslow.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old man from Wythenshawe, was arrested on suspicion of Failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and drug driving.

“The man is currently being held in police custody.”
