A butchers shop, jewellers and a post-modern home have all scooped a top community award.

The three winners fought off competition from a total of 18 new developments in the Macclesfield’s Civic society’s ‘new development awards.’

They were all nominated by members of the public and judged by a panel of civic society members.

The awards have been run by the society for a number of years and promote attractive architectural design which preserve the character of Macclesfield.

The three winners, who were awarded a commemorative plaque, were five affordable homes on Churchside, a new shop front at Jones Jewellers on Market Place, and a colourful new shop front for N Carter and Co Butchers on Church Street.

Keith Smith, chairman of Manchester Civil Society, said: “The judges consider good design and preservation or enhancement of the character of the town. The size and scale of the work, appropriateness for its setting and the promotion of the history, identity and distinctiveness of Macclesfield are also be considered.”

Nicholas Carter, 58, butcher and proprietor of N.Carter & Co, was ‘pleased as punch’ to receive the award, he said: “The builders have done a marvellous job and shop front looks really good.

“It’s a wonderful scheme for the town and I’m really proud to have won, we’ve got the certificate up on the wall and the plaque in the window.”

The group also awarded commendations for the car park and landscaping at Thornton Square, the renovation of the old Poundland shop on Mill Street by YMCA charity, and the rebuild of Macclesfield Office Supplies on Chestergate. The extension to Parkside Lodge, which is a Listed Building at Victoria Road, was also commended. To qualify for consideration, work has to be completed during 2014, and be within the pre-1974 Macclesfield town boundaries. The awards ceremony took place with town mayor Janet Jackson.

Following a display of pictures of the new developments the winners were announced and asked to give a few words about their projects.

Certificates were then handed out to those awarded commendations and bespoke commemorative plaques were given to the four outright winners, presented by Councillor Jackson.
