The head chef at a top hotel has admitted drink-driving, a court heard.

Ross Andrew Bootland, 35, who works at at Mottram Hall Hotel, was caught twice the legal limit after a night out, Macclesfield magistrates were told.

He was pulled over by police after he was seen swerving his car on to the wrong side of the road, prosecutors said.

Bootland, of Jordangate, Macclesfield, admitted drink-driving at Macclesfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

He was banned from driving for 20 months and ordered to pay the court a fine of £700 and £155 costs.

But the court also heard that the chef has to drive 12,000 miles a year with his job.

Kate Marchuk, prosecuting, said: “It was the early hours of January 19 at police on patrol at 1.19am saw a Ford Focus speeding at 40mph in a 30mph zone.

“The officer began to follow the vehicle and saw it swerve from side to side, crossing the white line in the middle of the road three times. The car was stopped on on Hibel Road and the driver, the defendant, admitted to having a few drinks.

“The defendant gave a sample of breath of 17mg, which the officer suspected was incorrect. He took another sample before realising the kit was faulty. The third reading was 74mg.

“The legal limit is 35mg.”

Danielle Paton, defending, said Bootland faces personal and financial hardship because of the conviction.

She said: “The defendant had been at a bar in Alderley Edge. He went to his car to get his night bag as he planned to stay over but in that moment decided to drive home.

“He fully regrets that decision.

“He is the executive head chef at Mottram Hall Hotel. He has worked there for six months.

“He lives five miles way so losing his licence will cause him great hardship financially as he will be forced to get a taxi to and from work.

“He drives about 12,000 miles a year as part of his job.

“He will certainly have to reconsider this position and maybe find another job.”
