A new £1.6million learning centre has  opened at Wilmslow High School.

The facility is an extension of the current pavilion and will be used by all pupils, but especially the sixth form and those students who follow an alternative curriculum.

The centre will provide more teaching space for students with disabilities and special educational needs. The opening night was well-attended by guests from schools and the business community, along with staff and council officials.

More than 80 guests enjoyed a drinks and canape reception, student-led tours andmusic performances.

A group of VIP guests were invited to cut the ribbon. They included Manchester City footballer Joleon Lescott, head girl and boy Lauren Summers and Alex Lloyd, artist Michael J Browne, football freestyle champion John Farnworth and Fintan Bradley from Cheshire East.

Gill Bremner, headteacher, said: “Students, parents and staff are delighted with the new building  after four years of hard work in securing the funding in partnership with the local authority.

“It is particularly pleasing to provide further outstanding facilities during a period of austerity”.

The building is part of an expansion masterplan and will help the oversubscribed school which has struggled with pressure on its accommodation.
