Hundreds of people across Wilmslow paid their respects today as a two-minute silence was held to mark Armistice Day.

At Sainsbury's supermarket, on Alderley Road, shoppers remembered fallen servicemen, when at exactly 11am the store manager announced there would be a silence and people bowed their heads.

Deputy manager Gary Berrisford said it was right to hold a silence to honour those who have fought in past and present conflicts.

He said: "It is probably as importan t  to do this now than it has ever been with the number of soldiers still getting injured in conflicts and losing their lives.

"It was fantastic to see so many customers standing still and remaining silent in recognition of Armistice Day.

"All the staff remained still and silent and 99 per cent of our customers did too.  It was very well received by everyone and we are still selling poppies for remembrance at the front of the store."

At Wilmslow Library on South Oak Drive people also stopped to remember.

Helen Perry said: "When the alarm went at 11am everyone stopped to pay their respects, you could hear a pin drop.  I think because of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan it has made it much more relevant for people today and everyone stopped to think about the soldiers fighting in those conflicts as well as the first and second world wars."
