Hundreds of shoppers turned out to wish the Treacle Market a very happy first birthday on Sunday.

Stallholders, residents and visitors buzzed around town to produce a record turn-out enjoying food, gifts, crafts and even wild animals.

Organiser Jane Munro said: "It was extraordinary, there was something in the air.

"It was lovely and sunny, there was a buzzing atmosphere and everyone was just so relaxed and good humoured. We were spread all along Chestergate this time."

The mum of two added: "What really comes through is that people stay for hours, not just to shop but to socialise, it’s really become an event.

"At the end we toasted our stall holders with a glass, a giant paella cooked by a stall holder and a huge birthday cake.

"Such a great sense of camaraderie has developed between the stall holders."
