Infection prevention products company Vernacare has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony for manufacturers.

The Bolton firm was highly commended at the Manufacturer of the Year awards, where it was up against competition from the likes of BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Sony and Ford.

Vernacare was praised for environmental improvements such as water recycling, as well as its investment in making its systems more efficient, including a multi-million pound packing and inspection line.

Vernacare was also honoured by Cranfield School of Management at its 2012 Best Factory Awards earlier this year.

It took home the judge's special award and was highly commended in the best process plant category.

Global operations director Derek McIntyre said: “2012 has been quite a year and I am enormously proud of of the superb achievements of my teams.

“We have learnt a great deal by going through this process and, while its nice to gain recognition, the important thing for us will be to put in place the new ideas that we have gathered.”

Vernacare specialises in manufacturing single-use disposable medical pulp products from recycled newspaper.

It produces around 150 million units per year and its products are sold in more than 50 countries.

In 2011, Vernacare was awarded the Queen's Award for Innovation.
