UNEMPLOYMENT in the town has fallen by more than third since last year, latest figures reveal.

There are currently 839 people in Macclesfield claimed Job Seekers' Allowance (JSA), compared to 1,297 in September 2013, according to the Office for National Statistics.

This equates to a drop of 35 per cent.

It means only 1.4 per cent of the working-age population of the town is out of work, and compares favourably with regional figures for the north west (2.4) and national figures (2.2).

Nationally, the number of jobless people fell to 1.97 million.
