A talented teenage fencer is appealing for help to achieve his sporting dreams.

Alexander Jones, 16, of Crompton Road, first picked up a foil when he was eight years old.

He now competes at international level and is hoping to win a place on the Great Britain talent squad.

His ultimate dream is to represent his country in the Olympics.

However, the cost of travelling to training in Bury three times a week, equipment, and costs to compete in competitions across Europe run into thousands every year.

His parents dad Graham, a technician at Macclesfield Academy, and his mum Janet, who is retired, fully support Alexander’s hobby.

But they are asking for support by individuals, businesses or organisations.

Graham said: “It is an expensive hobby and there is very little external funding. We are hoping that some of the expense of travelling to and from training and competitions will come from the GB talent squad but there’s no guarantee. What we would welcome is local support in terms of sponsorship.”

Alexander, who attends All Hallows school, became hooked on fencing after trying its on a taster session at Macclesfield Leisure Centre.

He joined a club in Bramhall before moving to a club run by former Hungarian champion and Olympian Robert Kiss, based in Bury.

Last year Alexander made the Great Britain U17 cadets squad and has been competing all over Europe.

Graham, 61, said: “He has reach a whole new level of competition against country’s with a stronger fencing tradition than here. It has been a great experience for him and he’s even more determined than ever to improve.

“Alexander is very passionate about fencing. He is really committed. But he is mature about what it takes to get to the top. We are very proud.”
