They took the plunge 70 years ago and for Victor and Jean Rose, it’s still going swimmingly.

The couple, who are in their nineties and live at Willowmeade Park in Prestbury, celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on October 25.

They thank their healthy lifestyle and teamwork for their longevity.

Grandmother-of-three Jean, 95, who still swims, dances and drives her Honda Prelude, said: "We’ve had a very, very happy life together.

"It’s down to teamwork and staying active.

"I still swim four mornings a week and on a Friday I have my hair done and then I go dancing. Often Victor and I are the only two up."

The pair, who met as teenagers, were married at Richmond Parish Church in 1941 while Victor was with the Highland Royal Signals at Catterick in Yorkshire.

They spent the first four years of their marriage apart while Victor served on the front line at El Alamein. Jean, who had been living with her parents in St Anne’s, said: "He went out as signalman and he came back after four and a half years a commissioned officer.

"I went to meet him at the station and I didn’t recognise him.

"He had put so much weight on because he had to drink so much fluid a day."

Victor added: "I remember (Alamein) vividly because we never knew when the next time a bomb was going to hit. I had several near squeaks, but they missed me. I missed Jean but I had lots of things to take my mind off it. I think it was harder for her."

Retired solicitor Victor, 94, joked: "I’ve decided to keep her – she’s served her apprenticeship now."

The couple will celebrate at the Bridge Hotel in Prestbury with their daughters Pauline, Nina and Pamela, and grandchildren Ross, Charlotte and Pollyanna.
