Chelford Police Station is to return to active duty as part of Cheshire constabularies' commitment to slash rural crime.

The station will undergo a refurbishment and act as a base for officers covering Chelford and rural areas between Wilmslow and Knutsford.

Divisional Commander Penny Wilson told a Police Forum meeting: "The station will provide a base for officers and Community Action Teams in the area.

"It will not be open 24-hours-a-day but there will be times when an officer is there to deal with queries from local residents.

"We will probably time it to coincide with market day in Chelford so that people living in the rural area can come in to meet police while in the village and pass on concerns."

The news was welcomed by Chelford councillor Caroline Andrew, who said: "The people in the village will be delighted by the news and will welcome a police presence in Chelford."

The move follows a firm commitment made by Supt Wilson to boost rural policing in Macclesfield Borough when she became Divisional Commander in March this year.

She stated: "I will be looking for ways in which to improve access to policing services generally, but particularly in the more rural or semi-rural areas of the division."

She has been assisted by £187,000 in extra funding across the county to deal with rural crime.

The new funding has gone towards protecting property with CCTV systems, developing a personal safety programme and paying for extra police patrols.
