FORMER United star Andy Cole achieved the biggest goal of his life at the weekend when he married his long-term girlfriend Shirley Dewar.

And the 30-year-old Blackburn Rovers striker looked more nervous than before any of his famous European treble-winning matches with Manchester United.

A huge crowd of well-wishers were treated to an early kick-off when Cole arrived at his local church a full 45 minutes before the 2.30pm start.

Wearing a dazzling gold three-piece suit, Cole was driven into St Bartholemew's Church in Wilmslow, Cheshire in a silver £240,000 Bentley Continental, where around 150 family and friends were gathered.

Accompanying the groom was his best man, brother Des Cole, and six-year-old son Devante, both wearing matching gold suits.

Many of Cole's soccer star friends attended the glittering occasion, including England hero Sol Campbell who, fresh from his World Cup exploits in Japan, drew huge cheers from the crowd.

Other guests included the USA's World Cup goalie and Blackburn teammate Brad Friedel, United's Nicky Butt, United legend Mark Hughes and footballing friends Andy Impey and Frank Sinclair.

And there was an extra special smile on Cole's face when old strike partner Dwight Yorke turned up in trademark designer suit and shoes.

Then it was the turn of family and friends, who needed three coaches to transport them from the five star Shrigley Hall hotel near Macclesfield where the reception was held.

Not wanting to break with tradition, bride Shirley kept her man waiting into extra time before stepping out to rapturous applause.

Wearing a cream satin dress and white veil, she held on to her brother Tony as she composed herself after shedding a few nervous tears while posing for photographs.

The hour-long service featured a traditional Gospel choir and was conducted by Reverend Jane Parry.

Rev Parry said: "It was a perfect wedding, great weather, great music and great support.

"Everything went to plan and I'm sure they will be very happy together."
