The sister of Norma Topping has paid tribute to a ‘wonderful’ carer who loved life.

Norma was born in the Collar House maternity unit in Prestbury to Norman and Doris Thyer and grew up in Gorton, Manchester.

She enjoyed fishing and sports as a youngster, later joining the Droylsden ladies football team, and was a keen golfer in later life.

She left school at 15 to work at the Co-op printing works in Longsight and later moved to Handforth, where she lived on Colshaw Farm and worked as a care assistant.

Sadly her career was cut short when she was diagnosed with dementia in 2004, aged just 58.

She lived in a series of care homes from 2010 until moving to Hollins Park in April 2013.

Her sister Lilian Selby, 67, said: “Norma was fun to be with and loved life. She whistled and sang all the time and was always the first on the dance floor.”

Lilian, who cared for Norma while battling breast cancer, added: “Norma was a wonderful carer but in the end was not given the care she deserved.

“I did my best for my beautiful sister Norma and my only regret is that I left her at Hollins Park.

“I hope she will forgive me. I promised our mum I would care for her forever and wanted to keep fighting for her.

“I’m pleased with the outcome of the inquest. I can’t say I’ve won but I’ve got justice for Norma.”
